As part of its Strategic Plan, the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is eager to bolster its youth leadership programs throughout Will and Grundy Counties. Working off of the success of past collaborations with local schools and organizations, the Center's staff has coordinated a number of empowering and educational activities for those youth with disabilities who seek independent living as they mature and enter adulthood. Valuable partnerships with Plainfield, Joliet Central and Lockport High School, as well as remarkable transition programs such as Career and Community Connections in Lockport, Hopewell Academy in New Lenox and others have provided a terrific model for these youth leadership efforts that bring value and vital information to the youth and families involved.
Currently, beginning in Winter, 2012, the Center's Youth Leadership classes are scheduled WEEKLY on Wednesdays, from January 25 through May 16, 2012, running from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. for high school and transitioning students. Sessions include discussions and activities regarding key issues and topics impacting the lives of disabled youth today:
“We’re here to applaud all of the great work all the staff does in leading the County – and down in Springfield -- to do what is necessary and what it right for its disabled residents. In stressing the importance of equality, you let us know if something is not being done, and working to promote what is being done right. In Pam Heavens, we have a wonderful, committed and compassionate leader that shares knowledge in a positive way…this organization would not be what it is today without she and her very diligent staff, so congratulations on this celebration."
